As well as group sessions, many surf schools now offer private surf lessons on a one-to-one or two-to-one basis. They’re a great way of focussing more closely on your surfing, whether you are a beginner or intermediate looking to progress to the next level.
Here’s some of the things you can expect from a private lesson, and why they’re such a great option:
Learn at a faster pace
With more focussed attention on you individually, you will develop your skills quicker. The surf coach will keep a close eye on you at all times and correct any mistakes instantly. So they’ll quickly spot that dragging back foot on pop-up!
It’s customised to suit your needs
Talk to the surf coach who will be taking the lesson in advance to discuss what you want to get out of the lesson. You may want to nail that pop-up, increase your confidence when going for bigger waves or get onto green waves! They’ll often choose a beach based on the current conditions and your ability. And because it’s just you and the surf coach, it’s easy to switch destinations.
Build your confidence
If you’ve never surfed before and feel self conscious in front of a bigger group, private lessons are a great option. It’s just you and the surf coach and you wont have to worry about what you look like in that wetsuit or what others around you are doing.
Hone your technique
Lots of surf schools now use video cameras to record the lesson so you can watch the footage back afterwards with the coach. This gives you a great insight into your technique and you can see exactly where you are going wrong. The coach can offer advice and you can go and work on it.
With less people in the group, the instructor can keep an eye on you and make sure you’re not drifting into rip currents or getting out of your depth. They’ll also be able to spot if you’re getting over tired and pull you onto the beach for a rest.
Although private surf lessons are often more expensive, the speed at which you’ll learn makes them very good value for money. They’re also great for family lessons!
