It’s estimated that US citizens consume more than 6 billion gallons of beer each year – 50% of which comes in cans. Most of the plastic rings that hold those cans together end up in the ocean killing marine life either through ingestion or becoming trapped.
Saltwater Brewery wanted to change that and connect with surfers, fishermen and people who love the sea.
The Florida based brewery has become the first to develop edible six-pack ring holders which could potentially save millions of sea creatures.
The rings, which would feed instead of kill marine life are made from barley and wheat remnants from the brewing process. They are 100% biodegradable and safe for fish, turtles, birds, mammals and other sea creatures to eat.
It’s hoped that larger breweries and beer companies will follow Saltwater Brewery’s lead which will help lower manufacturing costs and save hundreds of thousands of marine lives.
