Surf Schools in Wales 2

Wales is often over-looked in favour of Devon and Cornwall, but with over 1000 miles of coastline, Wales has some of the finest surf spots in the UK to choose from. Secret reef’s in the south keep the local hardcore surfers happy, while the more open sandy beaches such as Llangennith cater to the influx of holiday makers in the summer.

Surfing in South Wales and the Gower Peninsular

This area is widely recognised as the centre of Welsh Surfing. Facing a similar direction out into the atlantic, it picks up the same swells which hit Devon and Cornwall, often breaking over better reefs and points breaks. The coastline around south wales is a mix of rugged beauty, bucket ‘n’ spade resorts and heavy industrial areas. Conversely, the Gower Peninsular has an abundance of picturesque cliffs and coves, wide sandy beaches backed by sand dunes and was Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With consistent surf all year round, there are plenty of surf lessons to choose from in South Wales. Check with the surf schools to see if they offer winter wetsuits as it can get a bit nippy throughout the colder months.

Surfing in North Wales

The UK surf community is waking up to the fact that the north and west of Wales holds some real gems. Although the south peninsulas get the most swell, the north and west Wales beaches can offer some excellent surfing in the right conditions. The beaches around Hell’s Mouth (Porth Neigwl) are now hugely popular and thanks to the dedicated surfing community of nearby Abersoch, the area has gained a real ‘surf town’ feel.

The area has become a regular destination for surfer’s travelling from cities in the North West of England such as Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. And due to the improvements in road connections to North Wales, these guys can now call themselves ‘regular’ surfers.

Thanks to this new found love for North Wales, several surf schools have sprung up in the area offering surf lessons throughout the year as well as coasteering, kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding.
