Walking on Waves

Saunton, Braunton, Devon, EX33 1LG

Walking On Waves surf school is based on Saunton Beach in North Devon right in between Croyde and Braunton. Come and join me for some fun in the sea…

After years at the top of the competitive surfing game (British and European Champion), Sarah decided to return to her roots and give something back to the sport. Chances are you could get lessons from one of Britain’s most successful female surfers.

Our methods and ethics are probably best summarised by Sarah herself:
“I believe in, and take pride in, working with surfers at all levels – from first attempt to competition coaching. There’s a joy that comes from seeing someone stand up for the first time that invigorates me every time. Equally, there’s a sense of fulfilment at helping someone nail a manoeuvre that they’ve been working on for 3 months.”

AM First Wave

Our First Wave sessions are designed to get you off the beach, in the water, and having fun as quickly as possible.
We meet up at the Walking On Waves decking just to the left of the beach slip road where we'll get to know each other and jump into our "guaranteed to keep you warm" winter wetsuits. It's just 100m to the beach (although we have to be honest, if the tide's out it can be a bit further to the sea) where we'll go through the safety drill and give you a chance to practice on the boards before we get wet. Then it's off to the sea to get some real experience with the help of Sarah's expert on-the-water coaching techniques.

Myself, my wife and my brother in law arrived at WOW for our first ever surf lesson on a very windy (and slightly intimidating) day, and were immediately greeted by Sarah and made to feel very welcome. Any payment had already been taken care of, so we were quickly kitted out with a wet suit and board, then headed off down the beach.

The instructors were very friendly and chatty, and gave us a brief but thorough introduction to all the basics and safety signals, but then it was straight off into the waves to try it all out. The instructors were excellent at being on hand if you needed them, but also allowing you the time on your own. After a bit of help I was standing up regularly, and an instructor spotted this and explained basic turning for me to try. There was always a sense of being watched, and having help available, which was excellent.

The lesson was just the right length of time for a first attempt, and we all agreed that we’d had a great time as we headed back to the beach hut. I would highly recommend this surf school, and hope to return for lesson number 2 one day :)

My girlfriend and I had a brilliant time with Walking on Waves. Simon was a great teacher and we had the perfect amount of advice, help and chat. The class was informal and relaxed and we would definitely recommend WOW. We had a great time, and could surf (kind of) by the end of it!!!!

We were only staying in the area for a week and never surfed before. My 6 year old son, Alex, wanted to fish and surf but we only had time for one. We can go fishing at home but surfing in the Fens is about as likely as ski jumping, so we chose to surf. Our Walking on Waves experience was 5 star from start to finish – phone calls answered and return calls when promised, a smooth booking & payment system, fears allayed and advice given 2 days in advance.

Our instructor Max was brilliant. Right from our first meeting he was relaxed, helpful and great with kids. The weather was glorious but Max made the whole experience. He was patient, informative, excellent at explaining things, not in the least bit patronising and a total credit to Walking On Waves. He clearly loves sharing his knowledge and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone, but especially if you have children who want to try surfing. He spent loads of time with Alex, making sure he was safe and having fun, whilst also helping me try and master the sport!

We shall book in again when we are next in this part of the world. The two hours flew by and this was the most fun you could have in a wetsuit !

We were looking for the perfect surf school for our children and two of their friends. I contacted Sarah who replied to my email immediately. A three day course was booked and we were greeted like old friends. The two nervous children were instantly reassured and all four were up and surfing by the end of lesson one! The next day was cancelled due to poor surf and the lesson rescheduled to the Sunday morning. Lessons two and three saw tricks being introduced and four happy surfers leaving Saunton with a windswept surfers tan and huge smiles. If you’re looking for a surf school – do it right and book Sarah – a lifetime surfer who’s able to teach too!!

As a family of six (Mum, Dad and four children), it was always going to be tough to find a surf school that could balance the needs of us all. Sarah from Walking on Waves, took it all in her stride and in a natural way balances all of our needs – from absolute beginner trying to catch their first wave, through to eldest sons who want to catch the biggest surf!!! Sarah has a great way of dealing with the children, who are captivated by being tought by a former European Surf Champion and have developed hugely as a result of the lessons with her.

Super friendly guys. Really helpful, went out of their way to help us.
I have surfed for years but wanted my daughter to have a lesson first before I took her out. The lesson was fun but also technical. He was actually teaching not just watching. We had a great day in the water and will be back for more.

My girlfriend and I have had a few lessons with Sarah from Walking on Waves and her team over the past couple of years. We love the friendly atmosphere, expert advice and quality boards they have – its not all soft tops, you can have a proper board if you are confident enough.
I’ve surfed for a few years so I use the lessons to brush up and get some pointers on things I’m doing wrong, but my girlfriend is a total beginner, Walking on Waves helped her to get up on her first waves!
Also, they never go out on a flat day, you see some schools out in a total mill pond shoving people into waves, but if the swells not there, they wont waste your time!
