Although people have been surfing in Ireland since the ’60s, the surfing community in Northern Ireland has seen an unprecedented change in the last decade and the local surf industry has evolved with it. There has been an influx of new surfers from the cities and even more tourists flocking to the many quality beaches and reef breaks. The north coast of Ireland picks up a huge amount of swell as the North Atlantic pressure systems pass over on there way to Scandinavia, pausing on their way to push quality groundswell into the beaches around Antrim and Derry.

Surfing in Northern Ireland

The recent surge in new surfers to the area has brought with it keen beginners and Surf Schools have begun to spring up in the area. Although lots of the breaks in the area are well known for being big heavy reef breaks, the beaches around Portrush have consistent surf excellent for beginners.
